When Is It The Right Time Your Nonprofit To Rebrand?

Your brand is the foundation, voice, and aesthetic of your company. It’s what sets you apart in your industry. To quote Jeff Bezos, CEO/Founder of Amazon, “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.” If you’re noticing that your brand no longer aligns with your company, it might be time to ask yourself: “is it time to rebrand?”.

Here are a few indicators that it is the right time to rebrand:


Your organization has grown outside its founding mission. 

Most companies evolve and expand from their original mission. What made sense ten years ago may not be how you see yourself today. Whether you’ve added new products or services or shifted entirely, the brand has to accommodate your new clientele. For example, Fenty Beauty has gone beyond just makeup and now offers skincare products.


Your nonprofit brand isn’t standing out.

This particular reason focuses more on your visual identity. If your mission-based brand identity looks too similar to your competitors, your target market might overlook you. If you stand out, your potential customer or client can assume you’re innovative, and they will be drawn towards you! 

Your nonprofit brand could also be outdated. It’s easy to pinpoint design from the early ’90s and 2000s. A recent example is Burger King’s brand refresh. The flat minimalistic design kept the core features of the original, but it now comes off as sleek and enticing.


Your nonprofit brand image is negative.

This type of situation can sometimes be out of your control. When societal views have changed or a scandal has taken place, the best thing you can do is to show your clients/audience that you care and take feedback seriously. As we said, your brand is the foundation and voice of your organization; it needs to reflect your values.
